Good Ways to treat fibroids in the uterus

1. Medications to reduce pain and slow the growth of fibroids

The two main symptoms associated with uterine fibroids are abnormal bleeding and pain and pressure in the pelvis. In many cases, medications can treat these troubling symptoms of fibroids. Pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can reduce pain and pressure due to the presence of fibroids. In some cases, pain medicine may help. Hormonal medications can also treat fibroids. Birth control pills may reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, and agonists of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH agonists) may decrease fibroid size and decrease menstrual bleeding. Note that if you use medicines to treat symptoms associated with fibroids, symptoms may return once you stop taking the medicine.

2. Remove the fibroids with surgery

As the treatment of fibroids, doctors may recommend surgical procedures. In a myomectomy, your doctor may remove uterine fibroids, leaving the uterus in place. This particular surgery is a good option for women with fibroids who still want to become pregnant. Fibroids can recur after myomectomy, however. A more radical surgical treatment for fibroids is hysterectomy. In a hysterectomy, the doctor removes the uterus of the woman, so contained fibroids in the uterine wall. This surgery is a good option for women who have severe symptoms of fibroids, including heavy bleeding, or have very large fibroids. Consider hysterectomy only to women who no longer wish to conceive.

3. Consider alternative surgical treatments

Several other surgical procedures can work to treat uterine fibroids. One such procedure, endometrial ablation, destroys the uterine lining. This will reduce the amount of bleeding associated with the menstrual cycle. Women could not conceive after this procedure, however. The doctor may also treat fibroids using a procedure called myolisis. In this procedure, an electric current through a needle destroys blood vessels feeding the fibroid. The destruction of these blood vessels will help reduce the growth and possibly stop the growth of existing fibroids.

4. Cut the blood supply

A relatively new treatment for fibroids, uterine fibroid embolization or uterine artery embolization, appears to be effective in the treatment of fibroids. This procedure usually performed by a radiologist, removes blood supply to existing fibroids. In this procedure, the doctor inserts a catheter into the woman's leg and fed the catheter to the fibroid. Then the doctor injects small particles through the catheter into the blood vessels that feed the fibroid. These causes the fibroids shrink and die, which reduces the symptoms of fibroids.
